This song was originally released on the “Simplicity” album in 2013. I always felt that the one lacking element on the original track was that it could use real drums with a real drummer. I also had very clear ideas about a remix and other added new elements.
I have known Beth Varela for a few years and have played several gigs with her along the way. I thought she would be right for this project.
The song is obviously about my wife and our relationship. Though the guy speaking in the song is a bit more of a drag than I think I am. (At least that is what I think and you would have to ask Mary about that.)
I briefly quote “The Wind Cries Mary” by Jimi Hendrix at the end of the guitar solo which is apt given that the song is for my wife Mary.
One thing I wanted to accomplish with this new version is to remind people that I indeed did start my musical life as a singer and just might return to it.
Seems like I’m circling around my origins as a musician, which is my singer-songwriter phase. It’s been so long since I have done that sort of thing that many people familiar with my recent music and recordings aren’t even aware that I sing.
As I head back to this part of my musical identity I am revisiting the music of those artists who really influenced me.
Stevie Wonder is one such artist. A giant and in my opinion a true genius. And I rarely (almost never) use that term.
I am once again listening to his great recordings, especially the “Fulfillingness’ First Finale” album. Which, to me is amazing. Even 45 years later a true masterpiece.
I am currently putting the final touches on a recording a video done by my friend Rene Erickson, which will serve as my reentry point to the
