I still really believe in this song though the response to it over the thirty plus years of its existence has been sparing.

I clearly remember writing the song on a Sunday. It was the day after a long drive home from a gig in Northern Minnesota.
I had just had a dream about a guy who has difficulty showing emotions though he intensely felt things. This gave me the idea to write a song narrative through a character who is outwardly stoic but quite tender on the inside.

The recording is full of all sorts of subtleties both lyrically and harmonically like the “church organ” that comes in on the bridge to build up the “confessional” narrative. Or the loping improvised bass line against a rather slow evolving backdrop. I’m also rather fond of the vocal harmony background.

The piece was recorded at Paisley Park on a Studer analog 2 inch 24 track machine on February 28, 1993. We recorded and mixed the entire track in one several hour session. Headphones bring out a lot of things that might otherwise be not clearly heard.

Happy Holidays.
Be kind.
Love,
Reyn
