I recently had archive shelving built in the basement to house all of the CDs, vinyl, cassettes, master tapes, ADATS and scrapbooks I have accumulated over a long music career. All of this recorded media contains most of the source material of the 245 songs the BMI catalog claims I have written.
While sorting through some of these things I have found several somewhat forgotten tracks that (to my mind) deserve resurrection.
This track is one such song. I like how tight the groove is especially on the 5/4 to 4/4 parts. But the whole thing feels well played and I always like the addition of vocal harmonies. The clean, crisp production stands out too. It’s kind of a delight to reclaim a tune as if its brand new, especially if it still seems so fresh.
The lyric shows how long I have been contemplating “the great unknown.” (I even have a song with that title.)
The line “like a 50 year old child prodigy” is telling because I was still young enough at the time to think 50 was an advanced age at the time. That’s quite amusing to me now.
The acoustic guitar I used on this one is a 1920’s Koa wood vintage parlor guitar that was my current fave at the time. A great little instrument that currently lies in disrepair but also deserves resurrection.
It gets increasingly difficult to write new songs. This is a natural consequence of, not so much age, but the fact that with each piece of music you use up a certain portion of your creative reservoir. But the need to keep pushing forward remains. So, maybe, as you wait for some new idea of consequence to gestate, you look to past material that may have been ignored and forgotten and feels brand new.
