Maurice Ravel had a theory that a good way to come up with compositional ideas when “stuck” or having difficulty finding new ideas was to take a piece of music you admire and try to copy it. Ravel said (and I paraphrase) “you will come up with many original things unwittingly in your attempt to copy.”
Actually, on this piece, the source was Ravel himself. I tried to write something similar to his “Adagio” second movement of his Piano Concerto in G. (By the way, “Sunbeam” is essentially in E major.)
This piece was recorded twenty years ago and my aim was to write something as simple and plaintive as possible. I tried to arrange the violins in a very “CTI-Don Sebesky” manner.
The late Don Anderson plays the flute.
Be kind.
