“Sans Souci”
(Composed and performed by Reynold D. Philipsek 2004 copyright Zino-Rephi Music BMI)
There are four different versions of this tune on recordings. This happens to be one of two solo versions, with the other version being from a live radio broadcast. This is the version even I forgot about until I was happily reminded of it when it came up by chance on Spotify recently.
As the story goes, the title roughly means, “without worry” and this is a bit ironic as I am a chronic worrier.
Back in 1989, I was in Berlin for New Year’s Eve with a close friend (a German Blues musician named Hans) and went to Potsdam as a side trip. We toured the gardens and palace there called “Sans Souci.” I was particularly struck and haunted by this tour. That, too, contributed to the writing of this tune.
Along with pieces like “Butterfly,” “Beatnik Pie,” “Silesian Mist,” “July,” and “Tempus Fugit,” it is a signature piece. This also happens to be my friend Tony’s favorite tune of mine.
Take care. Be safe. Hope to see you soon.
