The winter wheat will rise and fall…

The last verse of this song states;
“The winter wheat will rise and fall,
East or West Old Sol sees all”

The basic gist of that stanza is that although time will bring great (or at times unwanted) change the moral truth is never hidden from The Conscious Universe. A timely message I think. What is right or just is not negotiable.

This is a song from the “Global Home Movie” album which details an around the world tour we made in 1994. This song was specifically about my impressions of rural China near Xian where we saw the “terra cotta warriors.” I had never seen a place so utterly untouched by the modern world than this agricultural area at that time. The experience of this new and strange detachment from my normal frame of reference and comfort zone inspired the song very directly. It is still, and may remain, the strongest and most surreal experience of my life.

We were going for a very stark but expressive atmosphere on this one. The arrangement is a bit minimalistic but very precise. The bass line does a lot of “shape-shifting” and counterpoints the cello parts which is a key point.

( I mean it, headphones really bring out a lot on this one.)

Be kind.

Love,
Reyn
