I never really measured success in the music biz by record/radio charts etc., but by 2012, I got curious about all of that.
I employed a reputable Jazz Record and Radio promoter and released the album “Last Summer’ which was meant to be a “sunny and summery” collection of tracks according to the promo flyer.
The CD would go out to hundreds of radio stations and publications in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia. The promoter also provided input on what tracks were featured and the final running order.
In the end, this paid promotion did get some results.
“Last Summer” reached #8 on the Cashbox Jazz Top 20 in the summer of 2012, and Roots Music Magazine placed the album at #64 on its top 100 Jazz albums of 2012.
While all of this was nice and makes for a few scrap book clippings, it is all just very temporary and ephemeral.
Still, I am glad I tried this sort of promotion just because I would have otherwise always wondered about it.
My lasting and most dedicated belief is in “karma yoga” which is to “do your work without expectation of reward.” I’m happier when I pay no attention to that other non- musical stuff.
Anyhow, it’s summer once again and I am reminded of this album and of one of several tracks that were featured on “Last Summer.”
This track obviously goes back to my memory of late 1960’s Italian-made “Western” movies and the composer Ennio Morricone.
I can’t help but think of summer and the two outdoor theaters in my old hometown (The Cloud and The 10-Hi) when I hear this again. The “Clint Eastwood trilogy” playing a major role in that nostalgia.
This was probably the most fun I ever had making a record. I think that joy is pretty evident.
