More than ten years ago I came up with the idea for “Butterfly” while jogging in the woods near my house. I watched the circuitous fight of a Monarch butterfly and the idea of the melody and mixing bars of 3/4 with one 2/4 bar came to me. That rhythm really did seem to match the butterfly’s flight.
This is my favorite version of the song.
There are five different recorded versions I know of and it’s the only song I ever wrote that has been “covered” by other people.
I really can’t help but feel that my Slavic heritage isn’t lurking behind this tune. Maybe there is such a thing as “genetic memory.”
