The idea of this piece was to depict the opening of a flower by “opening” up the harmony as the song evolves. This remains one of my favorite tunes. I often try to create visual images with musical ideas. I always thought that was a normal function of music.

However, during the college composition and theory classes I took in the late 1970’s, it was made clear to me that “absolute” music was the new clarion call for the “serious” music crowd at the time. “Absolute” music is defined as “instrumental music composed purely as music, and not intended to represent or illustrate something else.”

But I am more of a “program” music type. “Program” music is defined as “instrumental music that carries some extramusical meaning, some “program” of literary idea, legend, scenic description, or personal drama.”

As usual with me, the form is quite short and the emphasis is on concision, color, and brevity.

Stay safe.
Love.
Reyn
