This is one of my favorite pieces and recordings. The harmony was intended to “open up” like a flower – ergo the title. It is also a sort of exercise in minimalism, which I like very much. It’s probably not readily apparent but the harmony on this one is very much influenced by the late great Wayne Shorter.
The real origin of this piece came one afternoon when I found a chord sequence that (to my ears) went in unexpected directions. Rich harmony and “surprises” are key elements in music, even if the listener does not realize it on a conscious level. (How’s that for a proclamation?)
My longtime friend Gregg Inhofer joins me on this recording. As always, Stymie recorded it.
The videos I do are usually done by Rene Erickson but this one was prepared by an old and dear St. Cloud friend, John Ray Hammond.
As always, headphones help.
Be kind.
Love,
Reyn
