For about 7 years in the early 2000s, I had a weekly Sunday night gig on East Hennepin Avenue in North Minneapolis. We also played there on other nights as well during that period, including a few New Year’s Eve gigs. Consequently, a lot of time was spent playing music in that locale near the Hennepin Bridge. I essentially wrote this piece for that gig.
After a protracted period where I have not heard this song, I can see it has a certain charm. I very much acquaint this music with a certain time and place and the people and musicians I shared that time and place with. We played for a large group of “swing dancers” every Sunday, so the tunes had to have a certain “bounce and swing.”
So, the nostalgia that surrounds the music now enhances it.
