I engaged Lisa Reedy, a jazz record promoter, to hype this album to radio and press. Consequently, it is and is most likely to remain my highest charting record. “Last Summer” reached #8 in Cashbox during the summer of 2012. It also ended up at #64 in the top 100 Jazz albums of 2012. (Excuse this small boast but for me this was somewhat of a big deal.)
In 2012 I had a lot of new material to record. So the first move was to ask saxophonist Doug Haining to join in. Doug is a good friend and a fine player. We did some gigs and recorded a couple of tracks but Doug just had too many irons in the fire to participate in a working band. (Though Matt, Michael, and I remained as a working trio..)
We did, however, manage to record a few songs with Doug and this is one.
This also is essentially a “live in the studio” recording though l had Doug add some harmony part overdubs on the in and out “head”which gives the illusion of a bigger production.
