I first came across the term “Pavane” through my interest in Maurice Ravel. Both Ravel and his teacher Gabriel Faure wrote pieces based on this older form. In general, my preference for so-called “classical” music is that music which emanates from France and Russia.
The definition of “Pavane” is “a 16th and 17th century stately dance in duple meter.” There is a strong “processional” quality to a Pavane.
There are obviously several guitar parts layered here to provide the proper texture and counterpoint. There are three independent parts (on the recording each part is doubled).
There is a certain dreamy wistfulness to the progression and it might be perfect for the end titles of a nostalgic period film. As Ravel said; “the goal of music is to express life’s mysterious thrill.”
This is a very simplistic and brief example of a “Pavane” but simple and brief have become my guiding principles. Headphones help a lot.
Be kind.
Love,
Reyn
