Over the years, I have played many gigs on East Hennepin Avenue or the nearby North-East Minneapolis area. So that terrain has a certain vibe for me. For many of those years, we had a weekly Sunday night gig at The Times Bar on East Hennepin.
This type of “swing” is very much descendant from Django but I have always put a bit of my own spin on these sort of tunes and glad to have done so in retrospect.
The guitar improv has a lot of brio and includes some species of what a close musician friend of mine calls my “signature sextuplet butterflies.”
(I’ll take that as a compliment with crossed fingers).
Last September, my friend Gary Schulte (violin) suggested we pull this one out of mothballs and perform it at a street gig on Nicollet Mall in front of The Dakota Jazz Club. It went well. It renewed my interest in this piece.
(Headphones help, especially on acoustic bass line).
Be kind.
Love,
Reyn
