I have never played this song in a live performance. Not because I don’t like it but just because that is the way it goes with some tunes. I do have a certain affection for this quirky little jaunt. I remember that the improv solo was in one take and because of that there is a real spontaneity to it which is always preferable.
Yes, there is a little “Django” in this piece but the “la pompe” is a sort of Freddie Green/Gypsy hybrid.
Having more or less grown up in or near the “north woods” the title has some relevance. The melody and harmonies, for some reason, really do put me in mind of the “north woods.” There is also a little harmonic “device” I took from Hermeto Pascoal in there too, but no one would ever suspect that in a groove like this.
