It always has seemed to me that musicians are a bit like the central character in the Johnny Appleseed myth. They are itinerant workers who hopefully are sowing some small seeds of happiness or, at least, providing some small diversion from day to day worry and angst.

I used to think that I wanted to do something really important to validate my existence in this quaint old vale of tears but I now see that just extending a few moments of happiness to others might be as good as it gets. Slowly but surely I’m learning some lessons about “karma yoga” (doing your work without expectation of reward).

The trio on this recording has been my live performance group for years. (Headphones really help on catching everything in the mix.)

“Johnny Appleseed”
(Philipsek)

You scatter seeds all around
Johnny Appleseed
Looking for some fertile ground
Johnny Appleseed

To reap
To sow
Not sure
You know
But you try anyway

Good days
Bad Days
Hard knocks
High praise
It’s just the nature of the game

You scatter seeds all around
Johnny Appleseed
But are the roots in the ground?
Johnny Appleseed

To reap
To sow
But you’ll
Never know
What will come of it

You work
You toil
Hope for
Rich soil
That’s all you can do

Be kind.

Love,
Reyn
